Vital Information on Vaccinating Your Dog
Rabies
This is a fatal disease caused by a virus to which all warm-blooded animals are susceptible. The Rabies virus is of particular significance since it is also deadly to humans. Rabies is most commonly spread via animal bites. Your dog must be vaccinated for Rabies to protect it from exposure to possible rabid animals, and to protect other animals and humans were your dog to bite them. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health requires non-vaccinated animals to be euthanized or quarantined for six months or longer if they bite another animal or human. The Rabies vaccine is a small investment in protecting against the deadly effects on both your pet and your loved ones.
CDPC
This vaccine, commonly referred to as the "canine distemper" shot, offers protection against five canine viruses. Infectious canine hepatitis, caused by canine adenovirus, can cause serious liver damage and death in puppies. Coronavirus and parvovirus affect mostly puppies obtained from kennels, stores, or shelters, and can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Parvovirus in particular can be very severe and may kill young puppies. Canine distemper virus is especially dangerous to stressed dogs and may cause pneumonia, diarrhea, and even neurologic signs (changes in behavior and movement). The canine parainfluenza virus can cause damage to the respiratory tract, causing fever and coughing. This vaccine is a necessity to your dog's health since it helps protect against all of these important diseases.
Lyme Vaccine
Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria which is carried and transmitted by deer ticks. Once a dog is infected, it may develop fever, fatigue, joint swelling, and arthritis. Lyme disease has been diagnosed in dogs in the Northfield area. We recommend this vaccine for all outdoor dogs, hunting dogs, or any dog which spends significant time outdoors, especially near tall grass or wooded areas. This vaccine is highly recommended for any dog which travels up north in the warmer months.
Bordatella
This is a vaccine which is sprayed into the nasal passages and protects against kennel cough. Kennel cough is caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses. Bordatella is the most common bacteria involved in this highly contagious disease, which causes a persistent cough, fever, and malaise. Kennel cough most commonly affects dogs kenneled near many other dogs or in stressful situations. Therefore, this vaccine is recommended for any dog which will be boarded in a kennel. This vaccine is required at most boarding facilities.
