Cannon Valley Veterinary Clinic Solo Featured Pet CANNON VALLEY VETERINARY CLINIC Full Service Animal Care This is Solo, a 7-week-old female St. Bernard. After many months of planning for this special breeding we found out that there was only one puppy and Solo was born. She seemed to be nursing very well every two hours and seemed very content but after 5 days she did not seem to be gaining weight like she should. We brought her to Cannon Valley Vet Clinic where they weighed her and discovered she was just about her birth weight of a little over a pound, at 5 days old she should have almost doubled in weight so we were really concerned. She was just starting to dehydrate and Dr. Tollefson injected some electrolyte fluids in her and sent us home with instructions to bottle feed. When I brought her home she refused the bottle and I practically had to force her, and then she started acting very lethargic and stopped crawling around or being active. I really felt like she might not make it through the night and I feel that had I not brought her in when I did and given her fluids she would not be with us today. She did not take well to the bottle so many times when bringing her in to get an accurate weight the vets and people at the desk would try different methods and ideas which did eventually work and she started nursing with gusto, around the clock, every 2 hours. Breeding is not for the faint of heart. My thanks go out to all the staff at Cannon Valley Vet for all the interest and helpful advice to keep this beautiful girl healthy. In these pictures she weighs 12 lbs and is healthy and happy!
