"Una" is a 4 year old Newfoundland that came to the clinic at the end of October.  She was extremely lethargic, had been losing weight, not eating well and had diarrhea.  The extreme level of lethargy was a clue to Dr. Marcia Bisel that this may be more than the usual "upset stomach" commonly seen in dogs.  Blood testing was done, and Una was found to have Addison's disease, or Hypoadrenocorticism.  In this disease, the adrenal glands do not produce the normal levels of mineralcorticoids and glucocorticoids, which are natural steroid hormones in the body.  These hormones control a wide variety of body functions.  This disease can be very hard to diagnose as it can look like a number of other conditions.
Fortunately for Una her diagnosis was found quickly so that she could be treated.  She has taken some time to get regulated on the medications that she will need to take life-long.  But she has gained weight, is eating well, and is back to her previous energetic self!
